Both low and high self-esteem hurt

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin states that self-confidence is a concept that includes expressions such as “a person’s ability to express himself clearly and comfortably, socialize, defend justice, present his opinion and add meaning to himself”, and points out that self-confidence develops from childhood. Noting that faulty parental attitudes are effective in the development of high self-esteem as well as low self-esteem, Çekin emphasizes the importance of a healthy and balanced self-confidence development. According to Çekin, high self-confidence is as harmful as low self-esteem.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin evaluated the healthy self-confidence and self-confidence development of children. Noting that self-confidence develops from childhood, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin warned that “Confidence, which has become one of the most important concepts today, can cause some problems if it does not progress in balance in life.”

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin said that the concept of self-confidence, which includes expressions such as expressing oneself clearly and comfortably, socializing, advocating for justice, presenting one’s opinion and adding meaning to oneself, is based on beliefs about oneself.

How should a healthy self-confidence be?

Stating that a balanced perspective is important for the healthy development of self-confidence, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin said, “While having a balanced perspective on oneself describes healthy self-confidence; In low self-esteem, feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness are more prominent. In a high self-confidence feeling, only the positive aspects of the person and the feelings of perfectionism are at the center. Of course, being in either of the two extremes exposes a person to some difficulties in his/her life activities.” he said.

The basis of lack of self-confidence dates back to childhood years.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin, who stated that people who could not have a good relationship with their family, who were not loved, who were bullied, who were not approved by their parents, especially between the ages of 2-6, experienced problems due to low self-confidence.

People with low self-confidence constantly see themselves as inadequate.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin states that people with low self-esteem can’t be at peace with themselves due to their sense of worthlessness, can’t express their opinions in social and business life, constantly see themselves as inadequate, can’t take responsibility and decisions in their daily life, decrease in their persuasion ability, and can’t speak in public. and constantly feeling anxious.

Overconfidence also hurts!

Noting that high self-esteem, which is the opposite of low self-confidence, creates some difficulties, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin said, “Many people may begin to develop excessive self-confidence due to reasons such as today’s competitive work pace and family members’ desire to be ‘perfect parents’.” warned.

Beware of wrong parental attitudes!

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin noted that if the person’s childhood was constantly exposed to ‘you are the most perfect, there is no better than you’ rhetoric, if every positive or negative idea was approved with the motto of ‘our child should be self-confident’, the person’s high self-confidence at the opposite end is fed. Thus, the person can act as if he is a higher person than he is. He can lose his objectivity towards events and people. He may not know the rules, or he may stick his nose up and follow the right decision he has always known.” he said.

Stating that some studies conducted around the world reveal the harm that high self-confidence does to individuals, Solin Çekin said, “In an article titled ‘The dangers of being overconfident’, published by the BBC as a result of a study on 1,700 people, 38 percent of men have an eagle, 23 percent. 6% of them say they can beat a cobra and 6% say they can beat a bear. In addition, in another study conducted in New Zealand, 20 percent of the participants state that they can land an aircraft without support. The same participants are shown a short 3-minute video where a pilot takes the plane down, but it is not clear what the pilot is doing in the video, and the pilots who watch the video also state that there is no information about flying an airplane in the video content. The result, interestingly, rises from 20 percent to 30 percent. These data now show us that ‘we have self-confidence at risk that can take action beyond expressing an opinion on a subject without our knowledge’. Therefore, excessive self-confidence can often lead to an inability to reason about the perception of danger.” he said.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin said that another important point is that excessive self-confidence can be a symptom of a disease or a personality disorder, and it also brings to mind the ‘mania period’, which is one end of bipolar mood disorder. Çekin said, “This period can show itself with symptoms such as excessive self-confidence, high energy, excessive talkativeness, and low need for sleep.” said.

In both extremes, support should be sought

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Solin Çekin pointed out the importance of receiving support in low self-esteem and said, “Psychotherapies have a very important place here. As suggested, it is strongly recommended that individuals with excessive self-confidence receive medical support.” he said.
