Lumbar hernia is a very common entity in the world. Although they do not have any complaints, it is not surprising that we usually observe a hernia or hernia onset when a back MRI is performed on a person. They play a role in the formation of lumbar hernia, as gaining weight causes an excessive load on the spine, being too thin or suddenly losing too much weight will cause the muscles to become weak and cause the support of our muscles on the spine to decrease.
Not every hernia means surgery. The important thing is the examination of the patient and whether the findings are progressive or not. Your doctor will decide this by blending the MRI and examination findings together.
Many methods have been tried for herniated disc surgeries and currently the most effective method is microdiscectomy. The word microsurgery represents surgery performed with a microscope. The microscope allows the same surgery to be performed from a smaller wound by enlarging the operating field. Although microdiscectomy is mentioned as a closed surgery in some health advertisements today, microdiscectomy is not actually a closed surgery. It is an effective method that allows only a smaller surgical wound to be opened, minimizes the damage to the surrounding tissues and muscles of the patient in the operation area, thus shortens the recovery time, enlarges the operation field and considerably reduces the risk of possible complications.
METHOD: We also perform our surgeries with this method. According to the level of the hernia, a small window is opened on the bone above the hernia by entering an average of 1.5-2 cm in the midline of the waist, and the hernia tissue is cleaned with special tools by pushing the nerve root to the side. In our clinic, herniated disc surgery takes about 30 minutes, and when the patient’s entry to the operating room, sleep and awakening time is calculated, the time spent in the operating room takes about 1.5 hours.
After the operation, the patients are taken to the service. The patient, who is given food at the end of the fasting period that should be waited for 4 hours after the operation, is carried out under the supervision of our trained nurses immediately after the operation, and they see that the pain in the hips and legs is completely gone before the operation. There will only be a natural tingling sensation at the surgery site.
At the end of the surgery, only a small line is seen from the outside, as your wound is stitched from the inside. After the operation, a one-time dressing is applied to your wound before discharge and you are asked to remove the dressing and take a bath the next day. As a result, you will not need to do dressing when you go home after the surgery, and you will not have to wait for weeks for a bath, as in surgeries with large wounds.
After 1 day of hospitalization, the patient is discharged home. At home, your doctor will tell you what to do during your 1-week rest period. Control will be requested after 1 week. Afterwards, you will be told about the transition to your normal life and suggestions.
