The problem of urinary incontinence comes in the midst of the biggest problems of women today. In order to talk about this issue and to raise awareness of people, the Club of those who do not miss the life organized a seminar in Antalya, its 5th stop. Speaking at the awareness project realized by Canped and Continence Association, Continence Association Leader Prof. Dr. Tufan Tarcan, “If you are a urinary incontinence, do not compare yourself to anyone.” He said and added: “The problem he is experiencing may be completely different from yours. There are many different types of urinary incontinence, and they all have different treatments.”
This number is increasing in women after childbirth
Today, many people are faced with urinary incontinence due to uncontrollable and involuntary incontinence. In women, this number increases exponentially after childbirth. Taking it as their duty to raise the awareness of women about the problem of urinary incontinence by traveling from city to city, the “Life For Those Who Don’t Miss Life Club” was enthusiastically welcomed in Antalya after Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa and Izmir. In the seminar initiated by Canped and Continence Association and hosted by Manavgat Municipality with the presentation of Nergis Kumbasar, Continence Association Leader Prof. Dr. Tufan Tarcan and Secretary General of Continence Association Prof. Dr. İlker Şen took part as a speaker. At the seminar held at İbrahim Sözen Youth Center, Tufan Tarcan mentioned that the problem of urinary incontinence experienced by women can be different from each other and that they should definitely see a doctor for their treatment, while İlker Şen opened another parenthesis to pay attention to genetic transmission in urinary incontinence.
Stating that urinary incontinence is seen in both women and men, Prof. Dr. Tufan Tarcan said, “Although the problem of urinary incontinence in men is seen after a later age than in women, the rate of applying to the doctor is higher than women. Because urinary incontinence in women is seen as a natural consequence of aging and is perceived as a shameful bet. That’s why, as the Continence Association, we aim to gradually explain to the female group that incontinence is a problem and that it is not something to be ashamed of.” said.
Underlining that neurological diseases may underlie urinary incontinence, Tarcan said, “The diseases we encounter in young people and children sometimes end up in the abdomen. For example, we diagnose 15% of MS patients because the disease first appears with urinary incontinence and patients come to us with urinary incontinence.” he said.
There can be genetic transitions in urinary incontinence
Pointing out that urinary incontinence can also be seen after some surgeries, İlker Şen said, “Sometimes, urinary incontinence can occur due to inability to urinate. Some of these reasons are factors such as weight gain, giving birth, environmental factors, the foods we eat, and behaviors.” stated in the format. Emphasizing that they never recommend taking less fluid to prevent urinary incontinence, Şen said that this may increase future complaints, adding, “Even if some people do not give birth, urinary incontinence problems in their mothers can cause urinary incontinence later on, genetically.” he said.
Stating that incontinence can always occur due to wrong habits and situations where we encourage children to think that keeping urine for a long time is a good thing, Tufan Tarcan said: “If you are a person who has incontinence, do not compare yourself with anyone. There may be someone around you who has been treated for urinary incontinence, there is no condition that his treatment will apply to you. The problem he is experiencing may be completely different from yours. Don’t make inferences for yourself. There are many different types of urinary incontinence, and they all have different treatments. Your neighbor’s urinary incontinence may be very different from yours.”
Bladder pads make our job easier
Underlining that bladder pads have entered the areas of use properly in recent years, Prof. Dr. Tufan Tarcan continued: “Women or men with urinary incontinence should find a hygienic test with the help of bladder pads until the treatment is concluded. Otherwise, when an acidic liquid comes into contact with the skin, it can cause infection and a skin inflammation. As a result, diaper rash in children and skin problems in adults, for example, may occur. In order to prevent them, it is necessary to use bladder pads specially designed for this problem.”
Some drugs can cause urinary incontinence
Stating that the main point for people with urinary incontinence is that the source that produces urine is sound and that they always evaluate the kidneys first in the examination, İlker Şen continued his words as follows: When he comes to us, we first ask about the drugs he uses. Medicines have both urinating and facilitating effects. For example, flu medications cause some people to have difficulty urinating. Blood pressure medications also affect urinary incontinence in some. Since psychiatric drugs have direct side effects on other systems of the body, they can cause urinary incontinence.”
