Wrong consumption is vital

Drawing attention to the risks related to this issue, Dietitian Beyza Köse said, “Potato, which has many positive effects on human health, can cause food poisoning and even death due to mistakes made during storage before and after harvest. plants; Fungi produce a number of toxic aspects to protect themselves from external factors such as insects. Mistakes made in harvesting and storage (storage temperature, mechanical injury during harvest and transportation, humidity, ventilation and damaged insects) cause these toxic issues to increase and endanger human life. Potato content also contains solanine, one of these chemicals.

Dietitian Köse, who also emphasized that the amount of solanine can increase due to defects during storage and harvest, said: solanine in potatoes increases. The increase in solanine stimulates the synthesis of chlorophyll, causing the potato to turn from yellow to green. As the amount of solanine increases, the poisoning effect occurs together with the greening. Therefore, the consumption of potatoes with green spots/sprouts on it should be avoided. It should be stored in a cool place without light. Symptoms of solanine poisoning are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, sore throat, headache, and dizziness.”

Major poisonings may result in death

“Severe poisonings may result in death. For this reason, you should be careful not to leave the potatoes under the sun for too long, not to consume them when you see greening, and never to buy the green ones by checking the potatoes you buy while shopping in the market. If you have unconsciously consumed green potatoes and you have started to see the symptoms we mentioned, consult a doctor immediately. When we evaluate it in terms of Ramadan tables, it is worth not to consume cooked meals with potatoes for more than 3-4 days on average.”
