Pulmonary fibrosis is a disease in which gas exchange takes place in the lungs, has a spongy structure, and is characterized by thickening and hardening of the walls of the air sacs (alveoli). The resulting alveolar wall thickening disrupts the function of these vesicles, which normally provide oxygen entry and carbon dioxide output to our body. Over time, the oxygen need for our body becomes unmet and respiratory failure develops.
