Middle Ear Inflammation The middle ear is a cavity located behind the eardrum. The pressure inside is constantly changing, equalizing with the outer side of the membrane. If this pressure increases or decreases too much, various problems may occur. This condition is usually associated with a problem in the narrow canal that we call the Eustachian tube that connects the middle ear to the throat. The Eustachian canal, which connects the middle ear to the throat, has two functions. This channel both controls middle ear pressure and provides middle ear drainage. When you swallow, this channel opens so that the pressure is equalized. However, in young children, this canal is both short and straight, but in a child who has reached the age of seven, this canal acquires an anatomy that fully ensures its functions.
