Greetings, one of the questions I get the most is “My child can’t empathize! It makes me sad and angry. What can we do about it?”
First of all, empathy is telling the child something, “Would you like it if it happened to you?” Unfortunately, it cannot be gained by teaching in a didactic style with sentences like.
• In order for empathy to be learned, the child must internalize this concept. The conditions of internalization are; It is the child’s abundant experience and making sense of the events he has experienced.
One way to gain empathy is to model empathy. Caring about the child’s feelings will make it easier for him to express his feelings. “How do you feel now?” “This seems to have made you happy.” Phrases like these will make the child feel that their feelings are understood.
