In order to better understand EMDR, it is necessary to talk about brain structures. The right brain is implicit memory and traumatic memories are stored here. It is sensory, emotional, disorganized and automatic. It is nonverbal, there is no conscious recall, and the brain produces symptoms. The left brain is explicit memory, verbal, narrative, conscious, systematic and organized. Information in the left brain is encoded more accurately. Traumatic memories are stored in the right side of the brain and, without being processed, they get stuck in the most effective, painful part of the trauma, spinning around there. Thus, the story cannot flow and reach an end. The new information processing system is also blocked. In other words, the traumatic memory is frozen in the original state of the trauma that causes anxiety, distress, and symptoms. With EMDR’s eye movements or any two-way stimulation technique, information flow from the right brain to the left brain is provided. It is ensured that the film ends (not stuck) and that it is remembered correctly and re-story by filling in the gaps. Thus, the memories that are messy, messy and occupy a large area in the brain become more organized and take up less space.
