Continuing to be a bridge to life with the right treatment and pioneering practices in health, Dokuz Eylul University Hospital succeeded in bringing the 21-day-old baby Yusuf, whose throat was predicted to be pierced due to a cleft palate anomaly and respiratory problem, to life; The operation, which was performed without the need for surgical intervention, had a great impact on the public.

Making statements about cleft lip-palate anomaly, Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics Dr. Instructor Member Serap Titiz Yurdakal underlined that an average of 1,500 babies a year are born with this disease in Turkey. Noting that individuals with anomaly undergo a treatment process that starts from infancy and extends to adulthood, Yurdakal said, “The most important stage of the treatment is the correction of the deformity in the tissues originating from the cleft. Our university hospital has become one of the health institutions most trusted and preferred by families in cleft lip-palate disease.

PATIENT ACCEPTANCE FROM ALL TURKEY

Noting that Dokuz Eylul University Orthodontic Clinic gives priority to the treatment of children with any anomaly, Yurdakal said, “As Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Dentistry, although we are newly established, we fill an important gap in this field in our country; We are healing not only our region, but also patients from all over Turkey. In our faculty, distraction treatment or chin (orthognathic) surgery is also applied in pediatric and adult patients, along with pre-surgical shaping treatment in newborns with cleft lip-palate anomaly. With the support of our Newborn Unit teachers, we host the mothers of our babies born with this anomaly in our hospital or another hospital in our mother hotel. In this process, we teach them the treatment and nutrition education that they will apply to the baby at home.” he said.

Emphasizing that the correct treatment approach is extremely important in cleft lip-palate anomaly, Yurdakal said, “Actually, there is an important deficit in our country in this regard. Families who are already sad at the thought that their children were born different are also stressed about the health institutions they will apply to. With the multidisciplinary cooperation of DEU Faculty of Dentistry and Medicine, especially cleft lip and palate; We are taking firm steps towards the goal of becoming a reference center not only in İzmir and the Aegean Region but also in our country in the treatment of many congenital anomalies concerning the jaw and face.
