Anadolu Health Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “According to these statistics, prostate cancer is the most common in men in America. Lung cancer comes second and colon cancer comes third. The most common cancer in women is breast cancer, followed by lung cancer in the second place, and cancer of the large intestine and rectum in the third place.

Underlining that lung cancer accounts for 20 out of every 100 deaths in both men and women, Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “Prostate cancer accounts for 10 percent of deaths in men and 15 percent of breast cancer deaths in women. Colon and rectal cancer has a mortality rate of less than 10 percent in both men and women. Pancreatic cancer is the next most common cause of death in men and women. The mortality rate is 8 percent of all cancers. Liver and biliary tract cancers in men and ovarian cancers in women come next; Their death rates are similar and around 5 percent,” he said.

The most important risk factor is age

Reminding that the most important known risk factor in cancer disease is age, Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “As you get older, the probability of getting cancer increases. Apart from age, smoking and family history of cancer are among the most important risk factors. Various chemicals, such as asbestos, are also a risk factor for cancer. Ultraviolet light from the sun is also one of the factors that increase the risk of cancer.

There are important studies on diagnosis

Sharing his thoughts on the developments in cancer treatment in the next few years, Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “First of all, I can talk about the innovations in diagnosis. This part has perhaps witnessed one of the most exciting developments this year, because the new generation sequencing analyzes that we have used after the diagnosis of cancer patients have become available for screening healthy individuals as of this year. With these methods, it is possible to detect DNA fragments of cancer cells circulating in the body and then initiate attempts to confirm the diagnosis.”

New treatments in cancer treatment are on the agenda

Stating that the development of drugs that started in the past years and that stop the division by detecting different mutations on the cancer cell and stopping the division through mutations continues at full speed, Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “In addition to these, intravenous immunotherapy drugs that work on the immune system, drugs that emit radiation by intravenous administration, and innovations in radiotherapy devices seem to be available to more people in the coming years. Many studies continue on the use of mRNA vaccines in the treatment of cancer, and these include pancreatic cancer, colon cancer and melanoma. It is also possible to use these vaccines together with currently used scientific treatments, but these vaccines have not yet been approved for use in sick individuals, except for clinical trials. In this process, I hope that faster progress will be made in this area as well.”
