Pain should be shared instead of suggesting…
Stating that a situation that will create a shock effect can be encountered in trauma and acute moments, experts state that traumas due to natural disasters can create anger in the person. Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cemre Ece Gökpınar, emphasizing that there is a process of rejection and denial at the first stage, draws attention to the fact that attempting a psychological treatment or intervention to the individual while the disaster process is still going on does not relieve the person, on the contrary, it may cause a negative reaction. Gökpınar recommends that psychological intervention should be done after the denial and anger process, and that the pain should be shared instead of suggesting first.
Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cemre Ece Gökpınar made evaluations about the possible traumatic effects of the earthquake that shook Turkey deeply.
The physical effects of the disaster are considered at first glance
Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cemre Ece Gökpınar, who stated that a person may encounter a situation that will create a shock effect in trauma or acute moments, said, “The individual first checks whether there is a physical problem in himself rather than the psychological effects of the situation he is in. After physical injuries and environmental events are brought under control, psychological effects from trauma may begin to occur.
Traumas can generate anger
Clinical Psychologist Cemre Ece Gökpınar, who stated that the traumas experienced due to natural disasters can cause anger in the person, said, “The person experiences a process of not accepting and denial. The psychological effects of the disaster witnessed later can be reflected physically in the personal life of the individual. For example, symptoms such as sleep disorders and loss of appetite can be defined as the first physical symptoms. The person may experience some traumatic symptoms such as not enjoying what they have done, hopelessness about the future, being anxious, startled at the slightest sound, fear and startle when they see any fire after the fire.
Instead of suggestion, it is necessary to share the pain
Emphasizing that it would not be right to make a psychological intervention in the first stage of shock, when the trauma process has not yet ended, Clinical Psychologist Cemre Ece Gökpınar said, “We need to see the wound that has opened spiritually. Attempting a psychological treatment or intervention to the individual while the disaster process is still going on will not relieve the person. On the contrary, in such a case, it is possible to get a negative reaction from the individual. It is the best time for intervention when the psychological wounds of the person come to light. What needs to be done in this process is not to try to suggest, but to share and share the pain of the individual.” she said.
The intervention should be done after the denial and anger process.
Clinical Psychologist Cemre Ece Gökpınar, who noted that if there is no physical damage during a disaster and if there is a shock, the first intervention for psychological relief is defined as psychological first aid. Then the anxiety process occurs. As one moves away from the trauma process, an acceptance process occurs in the individual over the years. Among these phases, the period after the phase of denial and anger will be the most appropriate period to seek psychological help. Because something that the individual denies cannot help him. Acceptance is necessary,” he said.
The suffering of the victims should be shared
Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cemre Ece Gökpınar said, “The duty of those who witnessed the event from afar during the loss and mourning process is to share the pain of those who experienced the disaster and the people who lost it.”
