Teeth whitening

Shape and color disorders in teeth are an aesthetic problem that can cause discomfort in all of us. With the development of aesthetic and restorative materials in dentistry, many color, shape and position disorders in the teeth have become easily treatable. Bleaching, which is done to remove coloration with aesthetic concerns, is the replacement of the compounds that cause coloration by oxidation and reduction. Before the bleaching process is performed, the cause and type of tooth discoloration should be determined and whitening should be applied accordingly.

In previous years, prosthetic methods were used to solve the discoloration of the teeth. In order to provide aesthetics, porcelain or acrylic crowns-bridges were made by cutting one or more teeth of the patient. Naturally, as a result of this system, besides the loss of substance in the teeth, there were also uneconomical, laborious and long-lasting treatments. However, tooth bleaching system is an application that is much more economical, effortless and does not cause any structural changes in the teeth, and results can be obtained in a very short time (up to one hour) compared to the old system.

Tooth bleaching can be applied to all healthy living teeth, as well as to teeth that have changed color for any reason (root canal treatment, silver filling, etc.).

DENTAL BLEACHING CAN BE APPLIED IN VARIOUS WAYS.
1-Home bleaching (The system applied by the person at home with the control and cooperation of the physician
2-Office bleaching (The system applied by the physician in the clinic
3-Combined (the system where 1 and 2 are applied together)

In HOME BLEACHING, the physician prepares a soft plaque that can carry the bleaching agent according to this special measurement by taking measurements from the patient’s teeth. The bleaching agent is placed in this plate and placed in the mouth. It is left in the mouth for five to eight hours. This process is repeated for two or more days, depending on the type and amount of coloration. Although it seems like a risky system that leaves the use of bleaching agent to the control and initiative of the patient, the physician’s being very selective and careful in determining the case to be used, the high social and cultural levels of the people who will undergo home bleaching, the treatment method, dose adjustments and the risks that may arise in overdose should inform the patient sufficiently. informing the patient, calculating the dose to be used and how many days and the need to repeat the application, can eliminate many risks. In addition, while hydrogen peroxide in concentrations up to 35% in office bleaching applied under physician control is considered to be within safe limits, the hydrogen peroxide concentration released from carbamide peroxide with a concentration of 10-15% used in this system is 3-3.5%. This is a dose far from doing any harm. In home bleaching, the patient’s obligation to keep a plate containing chemical agents in his mouth for a long time, without eating or drinking, by always focusing his attention on it, and the length of this process causes many people who desire to whiten to look at this system more distant.

OFFICE BLEACHING is generally preferred more than the other system by the patient and the physician if there is no special case in case selection. The reason for preference is to obtain a very good result with an effortless application in a very short time under the control of a physician. In the system of the application, which is made with blue light with a certain wavelength, first the gums and the tissues that need to be protected are covered with a special substance. Then, a whitening gel is applied to the teeth and a blue light is given for a period of 15-20 minutes. Some devices can give enough light to an entire jaw. As a result, in a short time like half an hour, your teeth will bleach at least 2-3 tons and your process will be finished. Of course, this process may require another application after a short time, depending on the severity of the stain and discoloration on the teeth. It has been observed that the teeth continue to whiten until 12-24 hours after the whitening process is completed. This method can be used for congenital, systemic, metabolic, pharmacological, traumatic or dental fluorosis, tetracycline and adult minocycline stains, varicella, trauma and erythroblastosis fetalis, and coloring due to iatrogenic factors. Previously made restorations in the mouth (comp.dlg, porcelain or acrylic crowns-bridges) cannot be bleached under any circumstances. For this reason, restorations suitable for the new colors of the teeth should be made at least two weeks after the whitening process.
In addition, it is necessary to stay away from coloring substances such as cigarettes, coffee, red wine, etc., until at least two days after the bleaching process. In general, if the teeth are taken care of very well, retrospective discoloration is not seen much. However, in such cases, a one-day plate application eliminates the problem.

In the COMBINED SYSTEM, first the office type and then the home type are applied one after the other, depending on the situation.

The BLEACHING (whitening) system is not an application that will cause or directly damage the mouth and teeth under the control of a physician. On the contrary, it is a much healthier, aesthetic, natural, and inexpensive method compared to other treatments to achieve the same purpose.
