It reduces abilities such as attention, focus, decision making, memory, creativity and increases the risk of Alzheimer’s in the long run. Dr. Sinan Akkurt explained the increased risk of infection due to chronic insomnia as follows: “There is a direct link between the immune system and sleep. When people are sleep deprived, their immune strength decreases and the risk of getting sick increases. In terms of infections, we know that sleep changes different parts of the immune system to help protect against infections. Because of this, lack of sleep leads to reduced immunity and makes us more susceptible to infections.” Dr. Akkurt stated that insomnia also triggers risks such as weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, colorectal cancer and sexual dysfunction.

What to do for regular sleep?

Noting that it is necessary to be physically active during the day and say goodbye to daytime sleep in order to establish and maintain a regular sleep routine, Dr. Akkurt advised him not to eat and drink alcohol and caffeinated drinks before going to bed. He also suggested waking up at the same time every day, turning off all electronic devices in the house before going to bed, and going to sleep after giving ourselves a feeling of rest for a while in a quiet and dark environment. He said that supplements can be taken from Melissa and chamomile teas. Despite all this, he added that if the desired sleep level cannot be reached in terms of duration and quality, a doctor should be consulted and treatment can be applied by a doctor depending on a condition called sleep disorder.
