Pregnancy and herniated disc

by clinic

Pregnancy herniated disc is a completely special situation that brings some difficulties. In a woman, the growing fetus in the abdomen in the following months normally creates an additional load on the waist and negatively affects the biomechanics of the waist. As the baby grows in the womb, it creates a load on the lumbar region, which can cause pain over time.

While the baby grows slowly in the abdomen during pregnancy, the tissues in the waist and back adapt depending on this growth and develop in a way that balances this weight in the front of the mother.

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy increases the load on the lumbar discs. For this reason, doing light exercises in the first months of pregnancy and avoiding sudden movements provide great advantages for the expectant mother. However, if there is an existing lumbar hernia during pregnancy, the job of the expectant mother is difficult.

It increases the pain in the lower back and feet, as well as causes numbness and weakness. However, if there is a herniated disc with pregnancy, the work of the doctor and the patient is very difficult.

Because the difficulty begins in the diagnosis period. X-ray films and computed tomography examinations required for a clear diagnosis cannot be made due to x-rays that may be harmful to the baby. Especially in the first three months, no medication can be given to the patient. Faced with a patient with severe back and leg pain during this period, the doctor is really in trouble.

Pregnancy herniated disc treatment

If the herniated disc symptoms are severe and daily life is difficult with pregnancy, there are some things that can be done even in this situation. This is treatment that does not harm the pregnant and the baby.

These treatments include chiropractic, manual therapy and acupuncture. The patient should be relieved as much as possible under the doctor’s control and measures should be taken to prevent further progression of the hernia, and these critical nine months should be avoided.
