Carpal canal syndrome; It is a disease caused by the compression of the median nerve in the canal in the wrist. The structure called “carpal canal” is located at the wrist level and is covered with a thick band-like structure on the upper part. Within this canal are the tendons that enable the movement of our fingers and the median nerve. The median nerve mainly allows the fingers (head, index, middle and ring) to feel and make some movements of the fingers. The causes that narrow the canal, the pressure of the median nerve in the canal, and the deterioration in the function of the nerve create hand-wrist disease.
Numbness, tingling and pain increasing at night should be noted
The first signs of carpal tunnel syndrome; numbness, tingling and feeling disorder in the fingers. There are pains radiating to the hand, fingers and arm. These problems are more common at night and can be disturbing enough to wake people from their sleep. They express relief by waving, squeezing and rubbing their hands. Again, they say that pain and numbness increase in tasks that force their hands (squeezing, cleaning). Pain and numbness sometimes spread to the arm and sometimes to the shoulder and neck. In advanced cases, melting of the thumb muscles, weakness and difficulties in holding and grasping movements occur.
EMG (nerve measurement) test is performed on the patient, the diagnosis is made easily.
If moderate or severe/severe carpal tunnel diagnosis is made as a result of EMG, surgery should be performed.
The operation is performed on the palm of the hand under local anesthesia and is performed within 10 minutes.
After the operation, the patient can use his hand.
