People try to overcome multiple borders in a continuous process of “border crossing”. Boundaries exist as long as they are meaningful. At the same time, limiting access to something makes it meaningful. Boundaries are tools created and established as interpsychic activities. The boundary/sign is then internalized and regulates meaning-making in relation to the self (leading to different possible interpreters depending on the individual purpose), others, and the environment (via externalized signs). It can be thought of as the continuous production, maintenance and destruction of boundaries/signs operating in both the interpsychological and intrapsychological realms.
