Many diseases can occur in the yellow spot area, which is the center of our eye and the most important area responsible for clear vision, and can lead to loss of vision. Underlining that there is a lot of misinformation known to the public about diseases, Prof. Dr. Nur Acar Göçgil said, “When our patients who have a problem in the macula, that is, the yellow spot area, apply to us, they often come to us indiscriminately by saying ‘I have macular degeneration’ and they mean age-related macular degeneration. However, this is an incomplete explanation. It would be appropriate for our patients to better understand the diseases and differences that occur in the yellow spot area that requires immediate intervention.” said.

If you see these symptoms, don’t waste time! myopic patients are in the highest risk group
by clinicby clinicSymptoms such as flashes of light in the eyes, which are our most important sense organs, seeing flying objects, seeing gray or black curtains in the visual field, may be the harbinger of retinal rupture, which is a very serious disease. Emphasizing that early diagnosis and rapid treatment process are of great importance in the treatment of retinal detachment, Ophthalmology and Retinal Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Nur Acar Göçgil said, “If the tears in the retina are not treated, the retina is separated from its place and there is a serious decrease in vision. When this condition, which we call retinal detachment, develops, the only treatment option is surgical intervention.” made its assessment.

If your vision gets blurry from time to time, watch out! big risk from diabetes in eyes: blindness
by clinicby clinicOne and a half million people die every year from causes directly related to diabetes. Diabetes, which is one of the underlying causes of many diseases, can cause consequences such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and even blindness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one out of every 10 diabetics is visually impaired. Stating that diabetic retinopathy, which can result in blindness in the eyes, is a disease that affects both eyes, Prof. Dr. Nur Acar Göçgil emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and made evaluations about the symptoms of the disease and the treatment process.

Retinal detachment is something that occurs in any part of the retina, and it is the separation of the retina from the layer below it after more retinal tears. The intraocular fluid passing through the retinal tear gradually lifts the retina. If it goes unnoticed and progresses, central vision is lost with the detachment of the retina in the yellow spot region. Surgery is required as soon as possible. If the tear is noticed before it turns into retinal detachment, it can be treated with laser. After retinal detachment develops, it is surgically treated with gas therapy, local scleral buckling, scleral cerclage or vitrectomy operations, considering the location, size, number of tears and other accompanying clinical conditions of the retinal detachment in the eye.

prof. Dr. Ümit İNAN, Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a technique used in vitreoretinal surgery to treat conditions such as retinal detachments, vitreous hemorrhage, endophthalmitis and macular holes in a controlled, closed system. The procedure takes its name from the vitreous removal from the eye (ie vitreus + ectomy = vitreous removal) and the introduction of instruments into the eye through the pars plana.

The image of the objects we look at falls on the retina region in the inner part of the eye, which we call the retina, through the light. The image of the object we are looking at in the center of our field of vision falls on the macula. The macula is a very small part of the retina located in the center. It is only about 5mm wide, but is responsible for our central vision, most of our color vision, and fine details of our central vision. The macula has a very high concentration of light-sensing cells, which we call photoreceptor cells. Photoreceptor cells process the incoming image and send them to the visual center of the brain as a signal via nerve fibers after photochemical reactions. The image is processed here, and the image from both eyes is combined and interpreted, and converted into a three-dimensional image as we see it. Areas of the retina outside the macula process our peripheral or side vision.

The retina is derived from the Latin word “rete” meaning “net”. The retina is the innermost, light-sensitive tissue layer of the eye. The optics of the eye focuses the image of our field of vision on the retina in two dimensions. This image is processed in the retina and sent by nerve impulses along the optic nerve to the visual cortex. In the visual cortex, information from the two eyes is combined and three-dimensional vision occurs. When the light comes to the eye, it reaches the retina through the pupil opening in the middle of the iris, the lens and the vitreous cavity, and the image information focused on the retina is converted into electrochemical information and transmitted to the brain.
