Abstract This study was prepared within the scope of the final assignment on the subject of selective mutism, one of the subjects of the “Atypical Child Psychology” course. Selective mutism is the inability to speak in certain public situations where the child is expected to speak, such as school, social situations, which typically occurs during childhood. But in other situations, for example, at home or alone with the parent, it is quite normal for the child to talk. In this context, what selective mutism is and how it is diagnosed will be explained, as well as its relationship with anxiety, temperament and brain development. Important points about avoidance behavior will be pointed out, and the causes of selective mutism and treatment methods will be discussed. The behavioral therapy methods that are most beneficial in the field are also included. An example case report is attached. In the conclusion part; The advantages and disadvantages of treating selective mutism as anxiety are discussed. Keywords: Selective mutism, Anxiety disorder, Temperament
