Planning Skills in Attention Deficit Syndrome:

Prioritizing the tasks to be done, allocating enough time and completing the task in the required time depend on advanced planning skills. In our daily life, we have to manage our two limitations, time and money, with these skills.

Problems in planning skills in attention deficit syndrome are frequently reported by children and adults. They often experience the problems of not being able to finish their homework or work on time, not being able to get somewhere on time, or not being able to use their money efficiently. Sometimes they do not make realistic plans. They try to implement much more than they can do in a day, but they carry out very little of the plans they have created.

While devoting too much time to enjoyable activities (such as gaming, TV or computer), they always postpone tasks until the end. They know that homework needs to be done, but they don’t take action until the situation becomes urgent. This situation is observed more frequently especially in the jobs that he does not like. They make new plans in the periods when they did not plan correctly and took low exams. They make promises that they will implement these plans, but they can’t (not that they don’t). They complain of being late for school, classroom or service frequently.

A young patient of mine shared the consequences of not being able to plan his homework as follows;

‘Last year, I couldn’t implement most of the study plans I made for my exams because of the time I spent on fun things. Most of the time, I followed the fun suggestions of my friends and took the exams without being able to study. While almost all of my friends passed the class, I stayed for the September retakes. I was very afraid of failing the class. I had a very difficult time as I had to study the subjects of a whole year. If I had studied for the same classes on time, I could have passed my exams with almost 1 in 10 effort. I’m very regretful.’

Problems similar to those in time planning are also experienced in the use of money. Individuals with attention deficits tend to spend their money quickly on the things they love. Adult attention-deficit individuals, on the other hand, often have debt and interest problems because they exaggerate their credit card expenditures.

So what is the source of the problem in planning skills?

Studies on this subject have shown that planning is one of the executive functions of the brain. These functions are managed by the frontal part of the brain. Roughly, the fact that this region does not function efficiently is thought to be the source of the problem.
