Esra İnal, who portrays herself in the lead role of “8 Seconds”, a dramatic biopic that was released on February 27, 2015. The film focuses on the themes of freedom, difference, forgiveness and change, and the challenging life of Esra İnal is handled. “We live the truth, we meet in dreams!” In line with the slogan, we see what kind of changes dreams and their traumatic effects cause in our daily life and in our world of psychology. It is seen that the subconscious-dreaming relationship is given in the film, which is said to be the projection of reality. As a matter of fact, dreams are the expression of everything we have seen and heard in our past.
The film, which argues that a person cannot exist in a place where he is not like himself; “Can we call a cat a bird? Or don’t fly to the bird…” He whispers to us that we should accept our differences. In addition, the self-deception of the social rules of the society; he says that traditions are a state of delusion and restriction of freedom. Based on this, it can be said that Esra İnal’s ID is dominant according to the Freudian approach.
The fears and difficulties that people experience make it easier for us to overcome the obstacles that are thought to be insurmountable. They fuel people’s hope. In this direction, many scenes are included in the movie. We see this in Esra İnal’s suicide scene as well. The film summarizes the two moments in which one feels his existence: One when he falls in love and the other when he survives death. That is, existence essentially processes aggression, that is, death. Combining death with existence is another reflection of the Freudian approach in the film.
The film, which states that many unhappy people want to be silent about loneliness or the pressure of their neighborhood, is an example of the “superego dominance” of the Freudian approach in this respect. But it should also be known that the psychological problems that people experience can cause them to misunderstand their surroundings. In other words, unhappy people may be silent because they misunderstand their surroundings.
Esra İnal, who was in a mental hospital for a while, is an example of being against the society excessively, that is, using ID extensively. In this respect, psychological support for the correct use of the superego and the ID is very important. The individual should use the balance between pleasure with his ego and social pressure and bring the ego to the fore.
We are forced into what we are asked to be. Society is imposing on us. The concept of freedom has been damaged. As Shakespeare said: Cowards are gone, manliness is gone. However, we must entrust ourselves to ourselves, not to others.
Our effort to find ourselves can be accomplished by descending into our childhood and internalizing it. It should not be forgotten that we only have 8 seconds to reconcile with ourselves and forgive ourselves. It will be more beneficial for both us and the society’s mental and physical health if we put the society aside and reveal our inner potential clearly.
