According to the results of a research conducted on the subject, there is a significant relationship between the authoritarian, authoritarian and permissive attitudes of mothers and the social skills and school adjustment levels of their 5-6 year old children.

While authoritarian and permissive attitudes were negatively correlated with social skills and school adjustment variables; On the other hand, democratic attitude is positively and significantly correlated with social skills and school adjustment levels.

Types of Attitudes

Authoritarian Attitude: In an authoritarian attitude, parents give importance to have control over the child and to be heard. Authority, acceptance of rules, respect must be shown in every way. While the interest shown towards the child is low, the expectations for him are high. As a result of the authoritarian attitude, it is seen that children can be aggressive and oppressive, resort to violence and bullying in their peer relations, show a low level of empathy, a low level of cooperation and a low level of cooperation. Authoritarian attitudes can cause children to exhibit aggressive and oppressive behaviors as well as shyness and shyness. It is noteworthy that these children may be less socially adaptable and have low self-confidence. It is stated that when parents show their emotions in inappropriate ways, their children can show harsh reactions to their peers in situations such as anger and anger. Similarly, the fact that parents express their generally positive feelings towards their children reveals that they can also have emotional control in their social relationships.

Democratic Attitude: Democracy is shaped by respect and logic. The individuality of the child is accepted and respected. The acceptance of individuality brings with it the taking of his/her opinion in decisions about the house. Mutual and open communication is established between parents and children. It is seen that children raised with democratic attitudes are more socially compatible, responsible, creative, independent, successful at school, friendly, able to cooperate with adults and peers, and generally happy children compared to those brought up with authoritarian and permissive attitudes.

Permissive Attitude: High level of child care, open communication, low level of control. The rules and boundaries are not clear but extremely flexible. Expectations for mature behavior from the child are low. Even if it includes negative elements such as aggression, high tolerance attitudes towards the child’s behavior are displayed. In the permissive attitude, the unclear and/or very flexible rules and boundaries may negatively affect children’s learning of social skills. For this reason, children have difficulty in showing the expected care in following the rules, behaving appropriately, and successfully maintaining social relations in peer groups and in school in general, as at home.
