Vertigo (Dizziness), contrary to what is commonly known, is not a disease but a symptom of pathologies that may occur due to different causes and places. Most of the time, patients apply to the clinic with different expressions such as “The environment is getting together, the ground is slipping off my feet, I feel like an earthquake is happening, it wakes me up at night”. In addition to all these, nausea, vomiting, pressure and ringing in the ear, and hearing loss may accompany complaints.

What are the Diseases That Cause Vertigo?

Ear diseases that cause vertigo should be evaluated in two stages as peripheral and central. In general, 80% of dizziness is related to the ear. Peripheral vertigo occurs as a result of disorders in the inner ear or vestibular (balance) organs. Peripheral diseases are: BPPV (Bening Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo): It is the most common disease known as crystal disease among the people.

Central Vertigo is caused by problems in the balance center of the brain or in neighboring regions. It is a picture accompanied by neurological symptoms such as imbalance and speech-swallowing-vision disorders more than peripheral vertigo.

Apart from these diseases, vitamin deficiencies, metabolic diseases such as diabetes (diabetes), blood pressure, thyroid, cardiovascular diseases, traumas, muscle-joint disorders related to the neck, psychological disorders such as excessive stress, panic attacks and depression, food and respiratory allergies are also included. It may cause dizziness. While investigating the disease causing vertigo, the patient should be evaluated meticulously and approached in a multidisciplinary manner.

What Way Are We Following?

We approach every patient who applies to our ENT polyclinic with the complaint of dizziness, with the idea that “there is a patient, not a disease”. ENT and head and neck surgery specialist and audiologist Associate Dr. Sema Koç, who is famous for her numerous achievements in her field, performs a detailed ear-nose-throat and balance system examination. We perform tests with VNG (videonystagmography) and balance devices called VHIT for every patient who applies to our clinic with the complaint of dizziness. Audiometric Analysis (Pure Voice and Speech Audiometry)

It is a hearing and speech perception test.

Tympanometric Examination (Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflex Measurement)

It is the measurement of middle ear pressure and auditory system reflexes.

Video headimpulse testing (VHIT)

It is the evaluation of the vestibular (balance) nerve.
