Remember to breathe while undergoing rhinoplasty

by clinic

With the emergence of social aesthetic concerns in recent years, there has been a significant increase in the frequency of aesthetic surgeries performed all over the world. In our country, the density of the young population and the spread of urban living criteria have led to a serious increase in the number of such surgeries. In this respect, rhinoplasty has become one of the most frequently performed operations in the field of aesthetic surgery.

What is the structure of the nose and what functions does it have?
The skeleton of the nose consists of bone and cartilage tissues. In addition, there are conchae on the side walls of the nasal cavity. These structures play an important role in humidifying and adjusting the temperature of the air taken during respiration. All these structures are fed by a rich blood supply system.

The nose is one of our miraculous organs that undertakes many functions on its own. Its main functions are: being a respiratory organ, smelling, humidifying the inhaled air and regulating its temperature. In addition, it is aesthetically striking due to its position on our face.

What causes nasal congestion?
Nasal congestion is a common complaint in society. An otolaryngologist should be consulted if this problem, which develops especially with nose and sinus infections, is found continuously. Careful and detailed examination of the inside of the nose of these patients is very important.

“Endoscopic nasal examination”, which has become an indispensable part of otolaryngological examination today, makes serious contributions to the detection of diseases originating from the nasal or sinus cavities. With the endoscope, which is a fiberoptic system, in addition to the anterior part of the nose, the posterior part and the nasal cavity can be evaluated in detail. With this method, which can be applied easily and without causing pain in the patient, curvatures in the nose (septum deviation), growths in the nasal concha (concha hypertrophy), adenoid (adenoid vegetation) and sinus diseases that can cause congestion can be detected and appropriate treatment and surgical methods can be planned for them.

Can nose shape defects be corrected?
Yes. Today, people who complain about their nose shape or appearance can find solutions to these problems with aesthetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty). However, an important point that should not be forgotten is that a significant proportion of these patients have concomitant nasal obstruction. It is very important that the nose is examined by an otolaryngologist, especially in patients with this type of problem, in order not to miss the diseases mentioned above and to plan the appropriate intervention. If such a problem is not taken into account and/or appropriate treatment is not applied, functional problems will continue even if an aesthetically successful nose is created. Such that, these patients may develop diseases such as recurrent sinusitis, tonsil infection and pharyngitis.

In addition to these, some patients who apply only with the complaint of nasal obstruction may need to undergo rhinoplasty together with nasal surgery (septoplasty). In particular, patients who have received trauma to their nose or have severe curvature are included in this group. In these patients, due to the size of the curvature in the septum and the narrowness in the valve area, which is the narrowest part of the nose, septoplasty and rhinoplasty should be applied together to ensure successful respiration.

How is a successful aesthetic nose surgery?
Along with the concept of beauty that has been developing and changing for centuries, there have been many discussions on how an ideal nose should be in terms of aesthetics. Today, the aim of an aesthetically successful nose surgery is to create a nose that is not obvious that it has been operated, but that is compatible with the face and looks good. Of course, in addition to these, it is necessary to pay attention to the preservation of important functions such as respiration and smell.

A complete success in rhinoplasty can be achieved with a surgery that eliminates both aesthetic concerns and functional problems.

How is rhinoplasty performed?
This surgery is mostly performed under general anesthesia. Basically, two different techniques, open and closed techniques, are applied according to the problem in the nose. The structures that cause deformity on the nasal dorsum are removed or corrected. In addition, the tip of the nose, which has an important place in the appearance of the nose, is intervened with various techniques.

Is bed rest necessary after surgery?
Bed rest is not required after surgery. However, it is appropriate for the person to be at home, especially in the first week. During this period, lying down with the head elevated helps to accelerate the healing process.

What should be considered after the operation?
After the operation, a special protector is placed on the nose to reduce the swelling of the nose and protect it from impacts. This protector is removed after 1 week and a bandage is applied in its place. During all this time, any possible impact to the nose should be avoided. We also recommend our patients not to be exposed to the sun directly and not to wear glasses for 2 months.
