Chest Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. Fidan Yıldız ÜNAL said that Coil Therapy, which is used in the treatment of COPD caused by cigarette addiction, significantly improves patients.
In our country, the first week of March (1-7 March) is celebrated as “Green Crescent Week” every year. Green Crescent; It includes the struggle against all harmful habits such as substance abuse, smoking and alcohol, which have become a common problem all over the world. One of the most common addictive substances in the world is cigarettes. Smoking is a psychosocial problem that negatively affects not only the person who uses it, but also the entire society. About one million people die every year around the world due to smoking.
What are the Diseases Caused by Smoking?
Cigarette consumption negatively affects all organs of the body, especially the lungs, and causes serious health problems. From the moment we smoke, our body begins to be poisoned. The smoke reaches the tongue, throat, esophagus, respiratory tract, lungs and stomach quickly and hot. Known to contain more than 4,000 harmful chemicals, cigarettes can seriously damage all organs and pose deadly risks, especially to the lungs. It destroys the structure of lung cells by disrupting the protective structure on the cells that cover the respiratory tract. The biggest cause of chronic lung diseases (COPD) is caused by smoking.
What is COPD?
COPD is a chronic disease that causes respiratory distress, cough and shortness of breath as a result of obstruction of the air sacs and bronchi in the lungs. As this disease progresses, lung capacity is greatly reduced, and sufficient oxygen delivery to the blood and tissues is not provided. Drawing attention to the relationship between smoking and COPD, Yıldız said, “COPD, which starts at a symptomatic level with smoking, progresses to severe COPD if smoking is continued, and this disease cannot be cured unless smoking is stopped. In the treatment of severe COPD disease, oxygen and nebula treatments are given as well as drugs. Despite these treatments, COIL (intelligent spiral wire) treatment, which has been applied in recent years in patients who cannot breathe easily, has been successful in reducing the patients’ shortness of breath and increasing their quality of life.
What are the Benefits of Coil Therapy?
Published European clinical studies; patients treated bilaterally with endobronchial coils (smart coiled wires); exercise capacity, lung function, and quality of life. Yıldız said, “Coil therapy is beneficial in patients with severe COPD and respiratory failure. Smoking causes COPD and causes great damage to the lungs. With the coil surgery, these damaged areas are contracted and disabled, and the patient’s breathing is directed to the healthy lung areas. In this way, the patient’s lung capacity is increased and shortness of breath is corrected. For the success of this method applied in severe COPD respiratory failure, smoking should definitely be quit.” he said.
How is Coil Treatment Done?
Coil treatment is performed while the patient is in the operating room and under general anesthesia. With the bronchoscopy device, the damaged area in the lung is advanced and with the help of the catheter passed through the device, smart wires called Coils are placed in the damaged area of the lung and this area is disabled. In this way, the patient’s breath is directed from this damaged area to the healthy lung area. This is not a surgery, it is an endoscopic procedure. There are no incisions or stitches. After the procedure, the patient is taken to the service. He is discharged the next day after chest X-ray control. Another lung treatment is performed 1 month later.
