Dr. Aresh Soudmand informed about breast cancer. Underlining that the most important factor in the early diagnosis of breast cancer is the awareness of the person, Uzm. Dr. Aresh Soudmand said: “Detecting breast cancer early increases the success of the treatment and the chances of survival.”
“MORE COMMON OVER 50”
Cancer is a disease that occurs as a result of uncontrolled proliferation and growth of cells in any organ or tissue in our body. Breast cancer is cancer that develops from cells in the breast tissue. Breast cancer, which often occurs after the age of 50, is the first among the cancer types seen in women. One out of every eight women has a lifetime risk of developing cancer. The incidence of breast cancer increases with age. Risk factors of breast cancer,
• Being overweight
• Using alcohol and smoking,
• Lack of physical activity,
• Taking long-term hormone therapy,
• Family history and genetic factors (When breast cancer is seen in a mother or sibling, the risk of the disease increases three times),
• To give birth after the age of 30 or to have never given birth,
• Menstruation at an early age (the risk increases as they will be exposed to more estrogen hormone throughout their life),
• Entering the menopause late (the factor is also being exposed to estrogen hormone for a long time).
“MAMOGRAPHY SHOULD BE TAKEN ONCE A YEAR”
The most common symptom is the feeling of a painless, slowly growing mass in the breast and armpit. Pain may be accompanied, albeit very rarely. Breast swelling, thickening of the skin, inversion of the nipple, skin redness and irritation are other symptoms of breast cancer, although rare. The most basic method for early diagnosis is self-made breast checks at home. When any suspicious mass is felt in the breast tissue, a doctor should be consulted without delay. Normally, after the age of 20, it is recommended to have a breast self-examination once a month and a breast examination by a specialist doctor once a year. After the age of 40, breast self-examination once a month and mammography once a year are required. Mammography is considered the most basic method in breast cancer screening. Before the age of 40, mammography is not recommended unless there is a special reason. The reason for this is that it does not provide sufficient information due to the high density of breast tissue in young women.
The treatment of each patient differs and the treatment decision is influenced by multiple factors such as the course of the disease, the stage of the cancer, the age of the patient and other health problems.
