Violence Isn’t Just Physical

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8 to ensure gender equality and raise awareness of women in social and social life. Drawing attention to today’s women’s problems, Istanbul Okan University Hospital Psychology Department Specialist. cln. Ps. Müge Leblebicioğlu Arslan made important statements about the psychological violence that women are exposed to.

Happy March 8, International Working Women’s Day, which is celebrated to represent a group of weaving workers, whose history goes back to the 1800s, to defend their rights at the cost of their lives.

Today is a day when spouses, children, bosses and institutions at work buy flowers for women, make gestures, in short, make an effort to make them feel special. It is also a very special day in terms of catching the attention of the society, as it is a day when all the spotlights are directed on the value of women.

“It would be unfair to women to reduce it to just one day”

Drawing attention to the importance of the day, Dr. cln. Ps. Leblebicioğlu said, “It would be an injustice to women to reduce the 8 March International Women’s Day, which is actually a symbolic date, to just that day. If we see today as a day where we can change things by gaining awareness for the future of women, the meaning of the day will be more valuable. As both a woman and a mental health worker, I would like to draw attention to the psychological violence that women are exposed to today, which is ignored because it is not as noticeable and visible as the bruise on the eye, but is no different from the physical form of violence.”

“Not seeing the efforts of women is also violence”

Stating that violence is not only physical, Dr. cln. Ps. Leblebicioğlu said, “It is also violence to devalue your spouse’s actions and not to see their efforts. Paying less than a male employee just because he is a woman is also violence against women. When you attribute the hard-working promotion to the fact that it is only beautiful, and when you devalue the woman’s physical appearance rather than the content of the project, you will be perpetrating violence against women. Not giving what is done to women what is their right, devaluing and marginalizing their actions is as much violence as hitting and shouting, and unfortunately, violence against women can come not only from the opposite sex, but also from both sexes,” she said.

In addition, Leblebicioğlu said, “Together, we can heal the wounds inflicted on a woman by both psychological and physical violence, both socially and individually, more carefully and with due care. Flowers received on International Women’s Day and surprises are valuable if they are the beginning of a change.

I hope that this article I wrote on March 8, International Women’s Day, will raise awareness and contribute to the way women live their lives without being bullied for what they deserve.

She concluded her words by saying, “Happy 8 March, International Working Women’s Day.”
