It is a recurrent, chronic skin disease that can occur in various clinical forms.
The name psoriasis is derived from the Greek word ‘psora’ meaning itching.
It is one of the oldest known skin diseases.
Approximately 1-3% of the population has this disease.
It is characterized by glossy mother-of-pearl-white crusts on sharply circumscribed, pinkish, reddish plaques. That’s why it’s called “psoriasis”.
Scalp, knees, elbows and lower back are frequently involved areas. While some cases are quite mild, in some cases it can be seen as severe, involving a large part of the body.
Although the reason is unknown, it is seen in studies that an abnormality in the white blood cells in the blood triggers the inflammatory event and leads to the progression of the disease.
Skin that is chronically damaged by white blood cells thickens and loses its normal structure. While normal skin renews itself in 21 days on average, this period can be reduced to 3-4 days in psoriasis patients. This new skin, which forms 7-8 times faster than normal, is not naturally healthy. New plaques appear on the skin in the form of itching, injury, and mottling.
In the most common form of the disease, there is initially a small red bump. Then crusts appear and when the crusts are removed, small red bleeding areas are seen underneath.
After some infections such as psoriasis, streptococcal throat inflammation, it can gain activity with the intake of some drugs.
Lesions are usually symmetrical. There are many types of the disease.
Chronic and stable,
Like acute and variable.
The acute form may present with widespread skin redness or inflammation.
The type called psoriasis vulgaris is the most common.
Knees, elbows, inguinal region and genital area, arms, legs, palms and soles of feet, scalp, folds in the body are the most common areas of psoriasis.
Up to 30% of people with psoriasis suffer from joint inflammation complaints. In 5-10% of them, functional limitation occurs due to inflammatory events in various joints. In some people, joint inflammation complaints may worsen when skin involvement increases. Sometimes, joint complaints also improve when skin involvement improves.
Psoriasis decreases in sunny climates and increases in winter.
Studies have shown that psychological stress affects psoriasis and that psoriasis changes in serious life changes.
There are scientific studies showing that smoking and alcohol also increase psoriasis.
Treatment of Psoriasis with Acupuncture:
In the treatment of psoriasis with acupuncture, body and ear acupuncture points that increase the cortisone secretion from the adrenal glands in the body are used.
Allergy response regulating points are added to the treatment in order to reduce the allergic effects.
When necessary, the immune system regulatory points found by our diagnosis and follow-up system are determined and acupuncture is applied to those points.
Skin peeling is facilitated with appropriate skin cleansing preparations, and the skin is regenerated with an internal effect.
