Advice against food waste from the Sabri Ülker Foundation

by clinic

The Sabri Ülker Foundation, which develops projects for the dissemination of information on food, nutrition and health, made recommendations to reduce food waste. Habits such as a spoiled meal in the refrigerator because it was not eaten on time, buying more products than necessary, a food kept at room temperature instead of the refrigerator, cooking in large quantities and throwing away the leftover food define the concept of “food waste”. Wasting food does not only mean wasting money, labor and resources such as energy, land and water used for the production of food; food waste also increases greenhouse gas emissions, leading to adverse climate change. It is possible to prevent food waste by making small changes in our daily habits. The recommendations of the Sabri Ülker Foundation to reduce food waste are as follows:

Smaller portions!

Start your meals with a small portion and add it if you’re still hungry after you’re done with the food on your plate. You can also use smaller plates for food.

Pre-purchase check

Before you go shopping, check what you have in your fridge and shop for your needs.

Get a Menu Planning Habit

By making a weekly menu plan, you can both see what you can do from the food at home and manage your food shopping in this way.

prioritize

Instead of throwing away rotten fruits and vegetables at home, make foods and drinks that you can use.

Apply the ‘First In First Out’ Rule

When placing foods with a later expiration date at the back of the refrigerator, place the foods with the closest expiration date in the front.

Evaluate the surplus in the kitchen

You can use your leftover bread by making products such as croutons and breadcrumbs, or you can turn your softened fruits into homemade juices or ice creams.
