Appendicitis, which is thought to be seen in adults in general, is more common in childhood, contrary to popular belief. Studies show that 4 out of every thousand children undergo appendicitis surgery. Moreover, the risk of boys is higher than girls.

Appendicitis is one of the most common diseases requiring emergency surgical intervention in the pediatric age group as in adults.

WHAT IS APPENDICIT?

Appendicitis, a disease name. The name of the organ in which this disease occurs is the appendix.

We can simply describe the appendix as a worm-like extension at the end of the large intestine, called the caecum, in the form of a dead end, with one end closed and the other open to the intestine. This intestinal extension has finished its function in the direction of digestive function. It only functions in terms of immunity.

This wormlike extension, which normally does not cause any disease because one end is open, differentiates in case the open end is blocked for any reason. The intestinal content, which is extremely rich in bacteria, begins to multiply rapidly and the appendix begins to swell.

Causes

There may be various factors that can cause occlusion of the appendix and thus appendicitis. For example, the most common causes include swelling of the lymphoid tissue in the intestinal wall due to any infection, and obstruction of the duct in the appendix.

A rare seed or piece of petrified poop can produce the same result.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

First, there is loss of appetite and he complains of abdominal pain. This pain is usually followed by nausea and vomiting. It manifests itself with symptoms such as crying, screaming, pulling his legs to his stomach.

HOW DOES APPENDICIT OCCUR?

The inner surface of our abdomen and the surface of our organs in the abdomen are covered with a membrane called the peritoneum. Since this membrane is extremely sensitive to stretching, pain occurs when stretched. The stretching and swelling of the appendix causes the stretching of the peritoneum covering it, thus causing pain to be felt. The appendix is usually located in the right quadrant of the abdomen.

As the inflamed and swollen appendix touches the peritoneum, pain we know occurs.

HOW DIAGNOSED?

A child with stomachache, on examination, progressive pain occurs in the right quadrant.

Ultrasonography and blood urinalysis can be counted as auxiliary diagnostic methods, as well as computed tomography in recent years. Patients with suspected appendicitis are not given painkillers and antibiotics in any way.

AFTER SURGERY CARE

Appendicitis surgery usually takes 30-45 minutes. However, post-operative care is as important as surgery. Antibiotics are used against infection. The child is discharged 3-5 days after surgery, returning to normal life usually after 10 days.

QUESTIONS ABOUT APPENDICIT?

Why is appendicitis more common in children?

The appendix wall has a structure called lymphoid tissue. This process starts due to the swelling of this tissue. The reason for this may be infection in any part of the body.

IT IS VERY RARELY SEEN IN NEWBORN BABIES

APPENDICIT IS AN INFLAMMATORY AND PROGRESSIVE EVENT. IT STARTS, PROGRESSES, AFTER EXPLOSES.

BLOOD POISONING IS OBSERVED IN CHILDREN AFTER THE EXPLOSION OF THE APPENDICIDE, IT IS HIGHLY REQUIRED TO OPERATE IMMEDIATELY.

REMOVAL OF THE APANDIX DOESN’T CREATE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM IN ADVANCED AGES.

WHO SHOULD PERFORM APPENDICIDE SURGERY IN CHILDREN?

Of course, the surgery should be performed by the pediatric surgeon if the children’s surgeon can be reached, or by the general surgeon if not.
