CAN INSULIN THERAPY BE COMPLETELY DISCONTINUED?
Insulin therapy should be used for life in type 1 diabetes patients. These patients cannot use most of the oral diabetes medications.
Insulin therapy is used to control high blood sugar, prevent complications or prevent the progression of existing complications in Type 2 Diabetes patients who are not insulin dependent.
Even 10-15% weight loss in obese Type 2 diabetics can regulate their blood sugar.
Metformin, pioglitazone, drugs that reduce Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 enzyme (Sitagliptin, vildagliptin, etc.), GLP-1 analogs (Exenatide, Liraglutide) can be used in obese Type 2 diabetes patients to reduce insulin resistance and provide weight loss together with diet and exercise.
In Type 2 diabetes patients using insulin, the need for insulin may decrease with weight loss, the number of multiple injections may decrease, and the need for insulin may disappear completely in some patients.
