Spine Fractures Are Now Treated With Bone Cement. After the 15-minute operation, the patient is discharged on the same day.

Spine fractures, which are the nightmare of especially the elderly and those with osteoporosis, can now be treated with a 15-minute operation. The patient is discharged 3-4 hours after the operation performed with local anesthesia.

Eliminates Risks
Çanakkale Anadolu Hospital Brain, Spinal Cord and Neurosurgeon Operator Doctor Özkan Özger, who gave information about the method that eliminates the risks of general anesthesia and provides great convenience to patients in spinal fractures, said, “Spine fractures, especially in elderly patients, compression fractures. they are shaped. It can often be due to osteoporosis. This can happen with a small movement or minor trauma. While we used the corset method in the past, we can now do it with the methods we call vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, sometimes even by placing a plaster or bone plaster inside without the need for general anesthesia. The patient can stand up 1-2 hours after the operation and be discharged 3-4 hours later. Generally, our patients prefer this method. Because we do not receive anesthesia, we avoid the risks of general anesthesia, and because we are awake, we can control the legs by talking during the operation. This gives us an advantage,” he said.

Progression is Inhibited
Stating that the plaster method strengthens the spine, Özger said, “After the surgery, we put a plaster inside. This strengthens the spine. It prevents it from collapsing and moving forward. It also has a thermal effect. By destroying the nerve endings, it reduces the pain effect.” Saying that the method is very risky, Op. Dr. Özger said, “Of course, there are risks of infection, bleeding, and very rarely leg weakness due to the spinal cord. But when it is done in appropriate and experienced hands, very successful results can be obtained. These are the risks we have already listed, and those that exist in other spinal cord surgeries”
