Low back ailments are a common problem. Nearly 95% of these disorders can be treated with non-surgical methods, but the rest require surgery. Common lumbar disorders can be classified under the main headings of lumbar hernia, lumbar slip and stenosis.

Lumbar hernia is one of the leading causes of low back pain. Every person may face significant but insignificant back pain at some point in their life. Let’s not forget that every low back pain does not mean that there is a herniated disc. In lumbar hernia, there is usually low back pain, leg pain, numbness and loss of strength in the advanced stages. The pain is persistent and does not go away easily with medication. Lumbar hernia is a condition in which the cartilage structure, which acts as a suspension between two vertebrae, erodes over time and compresses the nerves that come out of the gap and come to the leg. Diagnosis is made by MRI examination. If the pain negatively affects the work and home life of the person or if there is loss of strength in the standing, the treatment is absolute surgery.

Narrow channel; As the name suggests, it is a condition in which the diameter of the bone tunnel through which the spinal cord passes is below normal. It is more common in older ages. Along with low back pain, the patient usually has pain in both legs and difficulty in walking. In advanced stages, treatment is surgical and requires screws (platinum).

Waist slips; is the displacement of one vertebra forward or backward over the other vertebra. This may occur later, as the joint and connective tissues that hold the vertebrae together are weak, that is congenital, or as a result of advanced wear or trauma in the spine. If the slip is mobile, which can be seen on a functional waist X-ray, the treatment is surgery and screwing is performed.

If patients do not have surgery and lose time for low back disorders requiring surgery, walking becomes increasingly difficult due to the increasing pain and weakness in the legs, and these people become needy of others.

Regardless of the reason, low back surgeries can also be performed without anesthesia (epidural anesthesia). It should be preferred especially in patients who are at risk of receiving general anesthesia (such as asthma, kidney failure, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes). In addition, this method brings the comfort of mobilization and discharge of the patient in a short time after the surgery.

The aim is to get the patient active as soon as possible and return them to their home and work life, hobbies and habits as soon as possible. It is important that patients who are offered surgery overcome their fears and have surgery without wasting time, because it should not be forgotten that surgery is a TREATMENT option that can produce a definitive solution.
