We are all deeply saddened by the great earthquake disaster in our country. The earthquake, which affected a very large region, left various traumatic effects on many of us. As those who experienced the earthquake, lost a loved one, voluntarily in the region and following the events from various media outlets, each of us went through traumatic processes in different ways.
Although their effects have begun to diminish for some of us, there are still people who continue to live with the same severity. We can list some possible reactions to such sudden and unexpected situations as follows; confusion, anxiety, feelings of guilt, sadness, anger, memory loss, excessive sleep or insomnia, bad dreams, inability to continue with daily life, startle at small things, feeling alert all the time, overeating or lack of appetite, need to control everything things.
Experiencing such situations is actually our reaction to these sudden and unexpected events, our coping mechanisms. As time passes, it is expected that these will decrease and we will return to our daily lives. But sometimes we can’t do that. In such cases, it is useful to get support from mental health professionals before it turns into a bigger traumatic damage.
I wish mercy to the deceased, healing to the wounded, and patience to the survivors. Sorry for your loss.
