Dogan S, Can H, Volunteer M, Alaygut E, Turan M. Evaluation of Intoxication Cases Treated in Anesthesia Intensive Care Unit. Tepecik Eğit Hast Journal 2010;20(1):25-28
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate intoxication cases hospitalized in the anesthesia intensive care unit (AYBU); to examine in terms of demographic characteristics, type of poisoning, and treatment results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The files of 112 patients who were hospitalized in the AYBU with the diagnosis of poisoning between 01.01.2008 and 31.12.2009 were reviewed retrospectively. Age, gender, number of days hospitalized, APACHI II score, type of poisoning (drug poisoning, organophosphate insecticides, food poisoning, toxic gases, alcohol, other), type of poisoning (suicidal, accidental and alcohol), treatment result (with healing) treatment refusal, referral to another in-hospital clinic, referral to another hospital, death) without any change in status.
RESULTS: A total of 2098 patients were followed up in the AYBU for a period of 24 months between 01.01.2008 and 31.12.2009, and 112 (5.3%) of the cases were found to have been poisoned. Of the poisoning cases, 60 (53.6%) were female, 52 (46.4%) were male; The mean age was found to be 33.94±17.58 (15-81). It was found that 90 (80.4%) of the cases were admitted to the AYBU with the diagnoses of suicide, 17 (15.2%) of them by accident, and 5 of them (4.5%) of intoxication after alcohol consumption. Thirty-four (30.4%) of the cases followed in the AYBU were sent home with recovery, and 9 (8%) without any change in their condition. 4 (3.6%) cases refused treatment and left the hospital voluntarily, 52 (46.4%) cases were referred to another clinic within the hospital after their first treatment, 2 (1.8%) cases were referred to another hospital for further examination and treatment, and It was determined that 11 cases (9.8%) died.
CONCLUSION: Poisoning cases constituted 5.3% of 2098 cases followed in the AYBU for a period of 24 months. It was determined that drug intake for the purpose of suicide was the most common form of poisoning. It was determined that poisoning was more common in female cases aged 15-24. Multiple drug and antidepressant intoxication were the most common drug poisonings. The overall mortality rate was 9.8%.
