İzmir Katip Çelebi University (İKÇÜ) Faculty of Medicine Head of Department of Child Health and Diseases Prof. Dr. Bumin Nuri Dündar drew attention to Turner Syndrome, which is common in girls. Stating that they formed the Turner Syndrome Working Group as the Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Association, Prof. Dr. Dundar said that they set January 10 as the awareness day to draw attention to this genetic disease and to carry out activities that will increase the level of awareness.

Cannot Be Treated Because It Is Unknown

Expressing that Turner Syndrome is a genetic disease that is more common than many well-known diseases in the world, İKCU Faculty of Medicine Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Dündar stated that they are carrying out activities to raise social awareness. prof. Dr. Dundar said, “The most important finding of this disease, which is seen in every 2000-2500 live female birth, is short stature. If girls with Turner Syndrome are not treated, they have a height of around 140 cm in adulthood. In the presence of unexplained short stature in girls, Turner Syndrome should be considered,” he said.

Can Be Determined With A Small Blood Test

Noting that the other common important finding of the disease is the absence of puberty findings in the individual, Prof. Dr. Dundar stated that treatment could not be started after ignoring other symptoms. prof. Dr. Dundar said, “The fact that autoimmune diseases such as infertility, congenital heart diseases, hearing loss, frequently recurring ear infections, diabetes, celiac disease are seen more frequently in these patients due to ovarian failure in adulthood, kidney diseases, eye problems, learning difficulties, osteoporosis ( osteoporosis) are other common important findings of the disease. Diagnosis can be made with a genetic test called karyotype analysis, which can be made in most centers in our country and made from a small amount of blood taken.

Early Diagnosis Early Treatment

Pointing out that early diagnosis and treatment increase the quality and duration of life of the individual, İKÇÜ Faculty of Medicine Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Dundar stated that osteoporosis can be prevented with hormone therapy that girls will receive during puberty. prof. Dr. Dundar said, “The biggest problem in Turner Syndrome is that it cannot be diagnosed at an early age and treatment cannot be started on time due to the lack of awareness in the society. Many children and adults with this disease in the society are trying to live their lives without being aware of their disease. However, initiating growth hormone therapy in the early stages of diagnosed cases provides benefits in terms of height increase. The treatment of these patients is also covered by the SSI.

Expressing that they work with parents in order to ensure the social level in Turner Syndrome, Prof. Dr. Dündar shared his hope that January 10th will be an awareness day that will enable girls with Turner Syndrome to solve all their problems, especially early diagnosis and treatment.
