How is pain measured?

by clinic

We do not have a chance to measure pain with a degree, like when measuring body temperature, or with a device like when measuring blood pressure. So, as it is always said, “Only the one who suffers knows the pain!”. Of course, we can learn a numerical value for the patient’s pain by asking a question like this: “If we say zero to a situation where you have no pain, if we say zero to unbearable pain or the most terrible pain you have ever suffered in your life, what number between zero and one hundred does your current pain correspond to?” .

In other words, we can understand the pain caused by the person who has pain, or we can ask him to say his pain as a percentage; in this way, we can only compare the patient’s pain with their previous pain, not with the pain of others. We have a number of forms for this.

These are forms that have been used for years, their validity has been accepted in the international scientific world, and they have been adapted to Turkish. They enable us to understand how much pain reduces the patient’s quality of life, how much it affects the patient’s psychological state, and most importantly, to compare it with other patients.
