Insulin resistance and weight gain

by clinic

The hormone insulin secreted from the pancreas not only regulates glucose levels, but is also effective in the metabolism of proteins and fats. During digestion, insulin stimulates liver cells, fat cells, and muscles to take glucose into the cell and use it for energy. If there is more glucose than is needed for energy, that is, if we take in more glucose than we need, our body turns it into fat for long-term storage.
Insulin resistance is when a group of cells becomes increasingly resistant to the effects of insulin. In insulin resistance, there are high insulin levels in our blood. There is a definite relationship between insulin resistance and weight gain. However, it is unclear which came first. It’s like the egg-chicken story. Both insulin resistance and weight gain are risk factors for type 2 diabetes and many other chronic diseases.
Insulin resistance and weight gain exacerbate each other. Factors that either contribute to weight gain or are characteristic of excessive weight gain, such as excess body fat, visceral fat known as visceral fat, poor diet and low physical activity, contribute to increased insulin resistance. In addition, insulin resistance is associated with high insulin levels, and high insulin levels promote fat storage.
It is highly likely that as one of insulin resistance overweight increases, the other also increases. Both have the same contributing factors and also contribute to each other. Adult weight gain has been strongly associated with increased insulin resistance in many studies around the world. Insulin resistance, the incidence of which increases due to ready-made foods, carbohydrate-based diet and lack of movement; While it invites many serious diseases such as cancer, obesity, blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, fatty liver, it is among the important health problems behind the inability to lose weight. Both insulin resistance and overweight are risk factors for chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. Taking one step towards overcoming one of these will inevitably improve both!
