Is long-term fasting necessary before colonoscopy? Paauw notes that it has long been believed that people should be on a clear, liquid diet for 1 or 2 days and drink a bowel preparation fluid the day before a colonoscopy. But the evidence shows it’s not necessary, he said. A 2020 study found that a low-residue diet that allows foods such as meat, eggs, milk and bread is not much different from a clear liquid diet in terms of bowel preparation and polyp detection during colonoscopic examination. In fact, they stated that patients who prepared with a low-residual diet had less nausea, less vomiting and less hunger, and they were more willing to have their next colonoscopies. Paauw said “Let them eat” in his presentation. 🙂
