Let’s get to know the lumbar hernia

by clinic

First of all, it is necessary to dwell on the meaning of the word hernia. Hernia is mainly used to describe the organ that enters, encroaches, invades an area that does not belong to it. For example, if the stomach enters the chest cavity where the lungs are located due to a tear in the diaphragm muscle that separates the thoracic cavity and the abdominal cavity, it is called “stomach hernia”. In other words, it is possible for a tissue to enter a region that does not belong to it.

Herniated disc There are approximately 33 vertebrae in the human body. These are called neck, back, waist, hip and coccyx regions. Among these regions, the hip (sacrum) region consists of 5 adjacent vertebrae, while the coccyx consists of five very small (qualified as undeveloped tail) vertebrae.

Between the other vertebrae (except between the first vertebra and the second vertebra), there are disc-shaped cartilage cushions that act as a buffer. These pillows are soft and watery in consistency and consist of cartilage tissue placed in a sheath called “anulus fibrosus”.

Since this cartilage tissue does not have a blood vessel of its own, it is very difficult to repair itself when damaged.

Belfitigi 2 Forced movements (especially heavy lifting while leaning forward) cause the structure within this cartilage to deteriorate and the cartilage to begin to dry and harden. The inner core, which presses from the inside out and strains the surrounding sheath, causes low back pain. Sometimes, excessive strain of the sheath causes some chemicals to spread from the sheath and disturb the surrounding nerve tissue, which sometimes gives findings as if the inner core, called the cartilage, has come out by tearing its sheath and is pressing on the nerve tissue (although it is not), a hernia has formed. . These findings go away after a while, no matter what is done, and the patient thinks that the lumbar hernia has healed. This is why it is thought that pulling the waist, trout wrapping or some incredible applications are good for herniated disc.

Herniated disc 3 After a certain period of time, when the sheath is torn and the inner core passes to the region that does not belong to it, that is, when a real hernia occurs, the low back pain goes away, but this time the leg pain makes the patient very uncomfortable. This is the real hernia that requires surgical intervention, and roughly 10% of patients with low back pain need surgery for this reason. There is no treatment method such as screwing the bones to each other in the treatment of herniated disc. The issue of connecting bones to each other is a completely separate topic and will be the subject of another article.
