Night urination – bedwetting

by clinic

In most children, voiding control is achieved with the completion of bladder development. However, in children who cannot fully achieve this development until the age of 5-6, nighttime urination emerges as a social and psychological problem for the child. It is more common in boys and around the age of 6, about 10% of children urinate at night, which is now a discomfort.

There are two types of night peeing. The primary (primary) type that cannot provide voiding control since birth and the secondary (secondary) type that starts to wet the bed again after providing voiding control for at least 6 months. 90-95% of children with nocturnal urination are within physiological limits. The main reason here is the inability to feel the fullness of the bladder during sleep, deep sleep, low-capacity bladder and genetic predisposition.

However, in 5-10% of children with night urination, there are also findings other than night urination. Night urination may occur in children due to diseases such as chronic urinary tract infections, bladder diseases such as reflux, kidney diseases, diabetes and constipation. For this reason, before starting the treatment of these children, these types of diseases should be investigated and organic causes should be ruled out.

Treatment should definitely be started in children who cannot maintain bladder control after 6 years of age. This disorder, which causes problems ranging from embarrassment and exclusion from the society, can be treated 90% of the time with strong dialogue between the physician, patient and family, approach to the child by reinforcing the sense of responsibility without blame, and treatments supported by drugs and devices if necessary.
