“Usually, melanin is fairly evenly distributed in the skin. However, as a result of the irregularity seen in these cells, called melanocytes, which give the skin its color, spots may appear on the skin. However, skin blemishes can also be seen due to factors such as genetic predisposition, use of wrong cosmetic products, some drugs and pregnancy. Expert opinion
It is very important to get the opinion of a dermatologist for blemishes. Incorrect applications, especially cosmetics purchased from the internet, can also cause bigger problems on the skin.
The most common spots
Fügen Erdoğan Çekin, who says that the most common skin spots are freckles, age spots or sun spots, melasma (pregnancy spot) and keratosis, explains the causes of spotting as follows:
“Conditions where the integrity of the skin is damaged, such as blisters, ulcers, burns, exposure to a chemical, or skin infection, sometimes results in high levels of melanin production. This causes staining. Exposure to sunlight for many years causes flat, tan, brown, oval spots, which are popularly called liver spots, but are not associated with liver problems. These spots are most commonly seen on sun-exposed areas such as the face and back of the hands. They typically begin to appear in middle age and increase in number as they age. People who have these may have a higher risk of skin cancer called melanoma. Bleaching agents such as hydroquinone are not effective. Although some patients state that this stain is opened with lemon, this treatment has no scientific acceptance. Some medications also cause staining on the skin. However, these are common areas of darkening and usually the symptoms disappear after the drug is discontinued. It may take longer to fade in people with darker skin.
According to the information received from Dr Fügen Erdoğan Çekin, the spots and their treatments are as follows:
Melasma (Pregnancy Spot)
melasma; It is the name given to the spots that appear most often on the face, especially in sun-exposed areas, with the appearance of black or brown brush. Melasma, which is frequently seen on the nose, forehead, upper lip and cheeks, can be seen in men, although it is often seen in women. In addition to sun rays, pregnancy, birth control pills, especially cosmetic products with high paraben content can cause such skin spots. In recent years, this type of skin staining is more common in people with thyroid and especially Hashimoto’s disease.
Sunspots
Sunspots, which occur more frequently in the summer but do not go away in the winter, are seen on the parts of the body that are exposed to the sun. The color of sunspots that become permanent on the skin may become darker in summer.
freckles
It is especially seen in fair-skinned people. Freckles, which can be yellow or brown, mostly appear in childhood. Freckles that darken as a result of sun exposure; It is more common in areas such as the face, back and hands.
Keratosis, Moles and Skin Cancer
Raised, brown-black and rough patches that can be seen all over the body in advanced ages are called keratosis. Although the appearance is bad, they are quite benign and do not become cancerous. Cancers that develop from moles are usually fatal. Therefore, moles should be followed regularly.
Medication
While creams containing hydroxychloroquine are only effective in melasma spots, it is unnecessary to use them for freckles and sunspots. Especially after laser, dermaroller and dermapen procedures, preferably sun-protected creams that accelerate wound healing should be used. Before these procedures, people should be questioned especially in terms of anemia and diabetes.
Stain Mesotherapy
It is important to be able to do it in the summer. Beforehand, the intensity and depth of the stains are determined with a special lamp called Wood’s lamp. Afterwards, the stain removal drug is injected to the desired depth with a needle.
Chemical Peel
Care should be taken when performing chemical peeling applications in the treatment of stains. People with dark skin are not suitable. Peelings used only to lighten stains should be preferred. In addition to the treatments that nourish and repair the skin after the procedure, sun protection treatments with factor 50 should also be used.
Cryotherapy (Freezing)
The spots are frozen with liquid nitrogen and the treated area first reddens, then crusts and falls off. Young pink skin emerges from the bottom. It heals in 7-10 days on average. Ice cream is used in the treatment of sunspots and keratosis.
PRP
It is the injection of the upper serum part into the skin by separating the blood taken from the person by centrifugation. The serum used in the PRP application creates a lightening in the skin color. The skin is renewed and gains a bright appearance. At least three sessions should be planned. Color lightening and restorative creams should also be added to the treatment.
Laser Therapy
It is one of the most commonly used methods. It is a single session process. It is effective in the treatment of sunspots and freckles. The type of skin and blemish is very important when used in the treatment of blemishes. It should be done in the months when there is no sunlight.
Dermapen/Dermaroller
Thin channels in the size of a hair are opened in the skin. Stain serums applied immediately after the procedure cause the drug to reach the desired depth. It is not recommended to do it in the summer.
