| The majority of patients with lumbar hernia can be treated with non-operative methods, which we call conservative treatment. However, if surgery is necessary, it should not be delayed, because today, the success rate of patients who are operated with an appropriate and sufficient technique is around 95%. If the right patient is operated at the right time, with the right technique, by the right team, using the right instruments and devices, the chances of success increase. The attention and experience of the surgeon, not interfering with the tissues from the skin with the naked eye, good illumination, and disabling general anesthesia by using spinal or epidural anesthesia when necessary increase the rate of satisfactory results and gradually reduce complications. In addition to relatively simple complications such as inflammation of the superficial or deep tissues, adhesions, epidural scar tissue formation, damage to the thick membrane called dura mater, important complications such as damage to nerve elements, adjacent structures, internal organs, large vessels and some other undesirable events are the most advanced in medicine. It can be seen all over the world, including centers at the highest level. Complications of anesthesia should not be forgotten. However, the fact that general anesthesia can be disabled when necessary, together with the superior technique applied and the tremendous experience gained, reduces the complications to the lowest level. Despite all this, all kinds of risks are still not zero. Science is constantly evolving. While many positive things have been done, we still have a long way to go. |
