Scoliosis and its causes

by clinic

Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine that can be seen in the thoracic or lumbar regions. It can be seen alone or together with kyphosis (an abnormal curvature from back to front).

There are 2.5 million scoliosis patients in Turkey. Although there is no specific study conducted in Turkey on scoliosis patients, the point of agreement of orthopedic specialists is that the disease is more common in girls. But the reason for this is not yet known. Especially, scoliosis exceeding 20 degrees is seen eight times more in girls than in boys. Scoliosis can occur for a variety of reasons. For example, it is seen in spastic children or those who had a stroke in childhood.

Scoliosis that is frequently encountered, however, is the scoliosis that occurs mostly in the 10s and is seen in the group whose cause is still unknown (idiopathic), and congenital (congenital) scoliosis that occur due to factors in the mother’s womb and present from birth. The exact cause of the first is unknown.

Congenital scoliosis is thought to be caused by infections during pregnancy, diabetes, and some vitamin deficiencies. It can be congenital (congenital). This condition is usually due to a defect in the spine or fused ribs.
