selective muteness

by clinic

The child does not speak in certain social situations where he is expected to speak, although he or she is speaking. This is thought to be a variant of social phobia. Shyness, fear of embarrassment, and social withdrawal are common in children with selective mutism. Almost all of these children are diagnosed with social phobia or avoidant disorder. Contrary to previous reports, most of these children did not experience early trauma or stubbornness. The outlook may be different in children and adolescents. Young children often have tantrums or “clinging” to their parents. They may refuse to participate in school activities. Older children may stay away from attending family or social gatherings and cannot enter into friendships.

TREATMENT

Cognitive behavioral methods can be successfully applied in social phobia. It is important to combine social skills development and anxiety-reducing techniques with cognitive behavioral methods. Medications are also used in the treatment of selective mutism.
