Early diagnosis of lung cancer increases the success rate of treatment.
Lung cancer is one of the most important causes of cancer-related death worldwide. However, according to the latest research, Anadolu Health Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal reminded that it is very important that people with a history of smoking should not neglect their lung screening tests.
The American Lung Association reported that the 5-year median survival of lung cancer patients is 18.6 percent. Anadolu Medical Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof., who pointed out that 16 percent of the patients in general have lung cancer caught early and more than half of the patients with lung cancer died within a year after the diagnosis. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “Even though no benefit has been shown for screening tests for the early diagnosis of many cancers, the 20-year results of a study questioning the benefit of lung cancer screenings have been reported recently.”

Stating that the survival status of 87,416 patients participating in the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program was reviewed in this study, Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “The cancer screening results of 1,285 participants from these patients were detected and 83 percent of them had lung cancer in the first stage. The 20-year survival rate of these patients was also 80 percent. In summary, the patient group for whom lung cancer screening with tomography was recommended in this study, which is 50-80 years old, has a 20 pack/year smoking history and has smoked up to the last 15 years, is that lung cancer is mostly diagnosed in the first stage and that these patients have a high rate of cigarettes.
