| In a person with lumbar hernia, treatment is started after the stage of the disease is clearly determined by a good examination and advanced examination methods. Thereafter, for the sake of practicality, patients can be divided into two large groups, those requiring surgical intervention and those not requiring surgical intervention. In the early stages of hernia development, non-surgical treatment methods called conservative treatment are applied. At this stage, the patient is given painkillers, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory drugs all over the world. Firm bed rest is recommended. Physical therapy can be done. Neurosurgery (brain-spinal cord-nerve surgery), neurology, anesthesia, physical therapy and rehabilitation specialist doctors, dieticians, psychologists, nurses and physiotherapists should be included in this team. If necessary, the opinions of specialist doctors in some other branches should also be consulted. This team should have a physical therapy unit and all necessary equipment in this unit, including traction (with a programmable memory automatic device). In the light of these principles, most of the patients can be treated with non-surgical methods by using modern facilities. In principle, surgical intervention is the last resort. However, if the disease has progressed and some conditions are met in the examination [which are the criteria that are generally accepted by the international neurosurgery community and go back to classical books], then the decision for surgery is made. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging method greatly helps the surgeon while making this decision. |
