Prof. from University of Kyrenia Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Levent Kayrin and Assist. Assoc. Dr. The Rapid Test Kit, developed and patented by Umut Kökbaş, can detect Rh blood incompatibility in just 10 minutes in the first weeks of pregnancy.
Prof. from University of Kyrenia Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Levent Kayrin and Assist. Assoc. Dr. Umut Kökbaş developed a fast and reliable test method for the detection of Rh blood incompatibility, which can lead to jaundice, anemia, brain damage, heart failure and even death if left untreated, and received a patent.
Rh incompatibility is a risky situation when the mother’s blood group is Rh negative and the baby is Rh positive. Expressing that the Rh positive blood cells of the baby, which pass into the mother’s blood during pregnancy, stimulate the mother’s immune system, and the mother’s body sees these cells as a threat and produces antibodies. Dr. Levent Kayrin said that these antibodies create a serious danger by breaking down the baby’s blood cells.
For this reason, if the blood type of the mother is Rh negative and the father is Rh positive, it is very important to determine whether there is a blood incompatibility between the baby and the mother. prof. Dr. Kayrin says that as a precautionary measure in pregnancies with Rh incompatibility risk, due to the time-consuming and expensive method of Rh determination, blood incompatibility injections are given to expectant mothers at the 28th week of pregnancy and within 72 hours after delivery. Anxiety and stress caused by the risk of blood incompatibility on the mother can also negatively affect pregnancy.
It’s Now Possible to Determine Blood Incompatibility in 10 Minutes
prof. Dr. Levent Kayrin and Assist. Assoc. Dr. The test method developed by Umut Kökbaş can detect whether there is a blood incompatibility in the 8th week of pregnancy. And in just 10 minutes!
By applying a nanopolymer-based biosensor system, University of Kyrenia scientists can determine the Rh value of the baby within 10 minutes from 5 ml of blood taken from the mother at risk of Rh incompatibility. Thus, with the new generation test kit, which has also been patented, it can be quickly understood whether there is a blood incompatibility in the baby. prof. Dr. Levent Kayrın says that if the baby’s blood group is determined as Rh negative as a result of the test, it shows that there is no blood incompatibility between the mother and the baby. prof. Dr. Kayrin stated that in this case, which does not pose a risk for pregnancy, the mother did not need a blood incompatibility injection, no additional treatment was required, and the normal follow-up was continued.
prof. Dr. Levent Kayrın said, “If the baby’s blood group is found to be Rh positive, there is a risk of blood incompatibility between the mother and the baby and a blood incompatibility injection is absolutely necessary to protect the baby. Pregnancy is followed much more closely and ultrasound findings that may cause blood incompatibility in the baby are sought.
University of Kyrenia Faculty of Medicine Assist. Assoc. Dr. Umut Kökbaş, on the other hand, emphasizes that being able to learn beforehand whether there is a blood incompatibility in their baby will help mothers to have a healthier pregnancy by relieving them psychologically. Dr. Umut Kökbaş says that by pre-determining the risk of blood incompatibility with the test they have developed, they will also prevent unnecessary injections to the mother.
Work Continues for Production
prof. Dr. Levent Kayrin and Dr. The widespread use of the test method, which Umut Kökbaş developed and patented, will provide great convenience for pregnancies at risk of blood incompatibility. Work continues for the production of the patented test kit. The test kit is planned to be produced and put into use in the near future.
