Types of scoliosis

by clinic

When a standing person is viewed from behind, the spine is straight. If it is curved, it is called “scoliosis”. It is seen that there is a curvature in his back and waist, one shoulder is lower than the other, the waist curve is distorted, and the ribs on one side of his back protrude. This curvature can be right or left curvature.

There are several types of scoliosis. To briefly mention the most common ones:
Idiopathic scoliosis: Its cause is unknown. It is the most common type of scoliosis. There is a familial predisposition. It is 10 times more common in girls than boys. It starts at the age of 10-11 and if not noticed, it will have progressed well at the age of 14-15.

Congenital scoliosis: There is a formation anomaly in the spine. Treatment is often surgical. If it is noticed until the age of 4-5, it can be treated with a much simpler surgery, perhaps without the need for an instrument (platinum).

Degenerative scoliosis: It is scoliosis that occurs in advanced ages (after 50-60 years of age). There is back and neck pain. There may be leg pain. Walking distance is shortened.

Neuromuscular scoliosis: It is scoliosis due to muscle weakness or paralysis

Other types of scoliosis: Postural scoliosis (due to posture disorder), scoliosis due to spinal fracture, scoliosis due to spinal inflammation, scoliosis due to low back pain.

Scoliosis is a disease that can be treated surgically. However, depending on the type and condition of the scoliosis, it can be followed for a while with a corset, and exercises to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles can be given. After surgery, patients are generally followed up for a long time (including years). The most important thing in terms of treatment is the early detection of the disease, the follow-up and the correct planning of the treatment.
