VARICOSE EXAMINATION ULTRASOUND
In varicose veins, patients are asked to use ultrasound as a test after the examination.
Ultrasound is an imaging method performed in the radiology department. Tissues are examined with sound waves. The human ear cannot hear the sound waves used. Ultrasound means “high sound”. Sound is an acoustic wave in a solid, liquid or gas medium.
In vascular diseases, the term Doppler ultrasound is used. Doppler and duplex are the same thing. The blood flow in the veins is shown and measured by the reflection of sound waves. Sound waves are reflected from the red blood cells (erythrocyte) in the blood and reflected on the screen as an image. The same method is used to show heart valves and holes (defects) in the congenital heart with echocardiography for the heart.
It gives useful information in the examination of arteries and veins in the legs. In addition to the functions of clogged or narrowed areas in the veins, clots, valves in the veins, enlargement (aneurysm) in the arteries can be seen.
- “Lower Extremity (legs) veins (venous: veins) are examined for varicose veins.
- There is no preparation stage like fasting or drinking water beforehand.
- Ultrasound is harmless. It is an examination that does not emit radiation. It can be done safely in pregnant women.
- The procedure is performed while standing or lying down.
- It is a painless examination. It takes about 30 minutes.
- You can return to your daily life immediately after the examination.
WHAT IS EXPECTED IN THE ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION?
There are two main veins in the legs, deep and superficial. The superficial one merges with the deep one in the groin area and pours into it. The main cap at this junction is important. In general, varicose veins in the superficial vein occur when this main valve leaks back blood. The underlying cause of varicose veins is often a leak in this valve. This leakage is also called FAILURE or REFLU.
Superficial vein (Vena Safena Magna: VSM, Greater Saphein vein: GSV) and Deep Vein (Deep Femoral Vein: DFV or Main Femoral) in the leg
l Vein: AFV).
There are veins and veins, called perforating, that provide the connection between the superficial system and the deep system. When there is a blockage or leakage in one system, the blood is directed to the other system.
- It is checked for blood flow and clots in the veins.
- The functions of the valves that prevent the backflow of blood in the veins are evaluated. Leaks in the valves in the superficial and deep veins of the legs are examined and numbered.
- The diameters of the superficial vein are measured in the groin and above the knee.
- Leaks are classified as Grade 1,2,3 and 4.
- The diameters of the veins are also measured in mm. In general, it is important for intervention that the diameter is more than 5 mm and the leakage is 3 or 4 degree.*****
IN BILATERAL LOWER EXTREMITY VENOUS DOPPLER ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION;
No sign of significant deep venous flow reflux (deep venous insufficiency) was observed in the femoral and popliteal veins with valsalva or caudal decompression (superficial) on both sides. NORMAL.
No significant reflux (signs of safenofemoral failure) was observed with valsalva or caudal decompression at the level of the spoon or medial knee in the v.safena magna on the right side. NORMAL.
Significant reflux (saphenofemoral failure) was observed with caudal decompression at the level of the medial knee of the v.safena magnada on the left side. Grade IV.
The diameter of the vena saphenous magna on the right was 7.5 mm at the inguinal level and 5.8 mm at the medial level of the knee.
The diameter of the vena saphenous magna on the left was 4.8 mm at the inguinal level and 3.3 mm at the medial level of the knee.
Both v. Cranial segments of the safena magna were seen open.
No sign of saphenopopliteal insufficiency was detected on both sides
The diameter of the vena saphenous parva was measured as 3.O mm on the right and 2.8 mm on the left.
In the examination in the erect position, spontaneous reflux was not observed with normal breathing in the veins examined at the above levels. Thank you for your interest.
