If the thyroid gland, which almost provides the stability of the body, works too much or works less, various symptoms show their effect on the body. When the thyroid glands, which provide the body’s metabolism, are overworked, symptoms such as tremors appear in the body, while symptoms such as constipation and hair loss appear when the thyroid glands are underactive. Hisar Hospital Intercontinental Otorhinolaryngology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Yavuz Selim Yıldırım gave information about the subject.

Thyroid Nodules detected as a result of examination and neck ultrasound pose a risk for cancer. These nodules should be followed up. Nodules are more common in middle-aged women. Nodules can be detected in one out of every three women on average, and when these nodules are not followed up, they can turn into cancer and spread throughout the body.

How Does Cancer Risk Occur? What Should You Pay Attention To?

  • A rapid increase in nodule size increases the likelihood of cancer,
  • Childhood exposure to radiation increases the likelihood of cancer
  • Carries a risk in those with a family history of thyroid cancer,
  • Carrying cancer symptoms on neck ultrasound
  • Nodules in the thyroid gland in odd or multiple numbers
  • If the nodules are cystic or solid
  • Whether they secrete hormones or not, the probability of cancer changes.

-Patients with nodules detected in the neck examination performed by hand should definitely be controlled by ultrasonography. Many of these patients do not have any random symptoms. The patients do not have any complaints, and they may be palpable during the examination by chance. The probability of cancer in all nodules is around 5%.
These incidentally detected nodules should be inspected with ultrasound and in the presence of suspicious findings, they should be checked with fine needle biopsy.

Which patients are at risk?

  • Nodules detected in childhood
  • Those with suspicious findings on ultrasound
  • Those with family history of thyroid cancer
  • Male sex and after 45 years of age
  • Those who had previous thyroid surgery
  • Those with a clear increase in the size of the nodule in the last Altai year
  • Having unsystematic borders in the nodules
  • Detection of mutation in fine needle biopsy
  • Nodule pressure on the trachea
  • Calcifications in the nodule
  • The nodule adheres to the surrounding tissues
  • Also has lymph nodes associated with the thyroid in its length

-Patients with neck nodules should be followed more closely if they have the symptoms listed above, these nodules are more likely to turn into cancer. If necessary, thyroid (goiter) surgery should be performed without delay. If there are no risky symptoms, these nodules are probably benign and require periodic follow-up.

How is Goiter Surgery Performed?

Today, together with the opportunities provided by technology, healthy tissues can be preserved by removing only the cancerous part of the thyroid gland.

-Patients may not need to use hormones continuously
-Para thyroid glands that regulate calcium metabolism are preserved.
-Border monitor is used to prevent vocal cord paralysis.
-Small incisions are made so that no scars are left on the neck.
